When, where, what do you eat?

If there’s one thing CrossFitters talk about more than throwing around weight, its what, where and when they eat. Nutrition is a touchy topic with some, and everyone has a system (sometimes a religion) they follow. The most common…The Zone, Paleo and Intermittent Fasting.

Zone– Protein/Fat/Carb at every meal, timed throughout the day to control insulin levels.
Paleo/Caveman– Meat, fruits, nuts vegetables, no beans or grains
Intermittent Fasting- you eat for 8 hours a day and fast the rest

What do I do? A paleo zoneish fast. You’re probably scratching your head asking what they hell is that. I eat clean foods 85% of the time, I try to get a protein, fat and carb at each meal, and I eat when I can.

This time last year I was a nutrition nazi. I weighed and measured everything I put in my mouth….everything. To the point I would stress out if someone at an almond from a perfectly rationed snack. (really….really….it’s an almond!) I know, I said i was a nutrition nazi.

Over the last 3 months all of that has fallen to the wayside, why? I’ve opened a business that has me working 5-9am everyday, then driving an hour to train at The Gorilla Pit, and driving an hour back to run classes from 4-9pm. Yeah, not a whole lot of time for perfectly timed and rationed meals. so when do I eat? Here’s what a typical day looks like for me:

5am – Breakfast
8am-Protein shake from AtLargeNutrition
12pm Chocolate milk (post workout recovery)
2pm Lunch
4pm Snack
8:40pm Small dinner

Somedays I may squeeze in another meal or an extra snack, somedays I miss meals or the timing may be different.  I guess what I’m saying is, at the end of the day I listen to my body.  If I’m hungry I eat.  If I’m not I don’t, and I don’t stress out of portions or timing.  And guess what…..all of my lifts have gone up significantly and my endurance is through the roof and I’m not following any one system.  Experiment….experiment……experiment……. Only you know what will work for you.
